This is a very true statement and should give you some idea of what NOT to look for in a breeder!! I did get this from another website so no I did not write this myself.
Do you breed dogs? Are you a puppymill?
What is a puppymill??
are YOU one?
1. If you do not know how many dogs you own, YOU are a puppy mill..
2. If you can not remember the previous owners of all your dogs, YOU are a puppymill..
3. If you can not remember the last time your dogs were bathed, teeth cleaned, or vaccinated without having to look at records, YOU are a puppymill..
4. If you do not HAVE vaccination/health records for every dog, YOU are a puppymill...
5. If you do not know the names of all your dogs, YOU are a puppymill...
6. If you do not know dates litters were whelped on and do not have records of such to rely on, YOU are a puppymill...
7. If you do not register your dogs/puppies and sell with full registration making money,YOU are a puppymill...
8. If you do not keep records of matings between your dogs and others, YOU are a puppymill...
9. If you can not remember how old your breeding bitch is and you are still breeding her,YOU are a puppymill..
10. If you know about and breed dogs with known hereditary or physical handicaps; such as BLINDNESS, deafness, hernias, luxating patella's or any other physical or hereditary handicap, YOU are a puppymill..
11. If you do not have any physical contact with your bitch/stud except to breed her/him,YOU are a puppymill..
12. If you do not plan your breedings with your studs and bitches and drop them in a run with the next available dog, YOU are a puppymill...
13. If you have not registered your breeding dam and sell her puppies with full registration,YOU are a puppymill...
14. If you breed dogs with known bad or dangerous temperament issues, YOU are a puppymill...
15. If you own breeding bitches and send them to other breeders to board with the intention of making money off of their litters, YOU are a puppymill...
16. If you sell breeding bitches and then wait til they have litters and then refuse papers on them only to claim the litters as your own to make money, YOU are a puppymill...
17. If you sell to puppy stores or sell your puppies/dogs at a flea market or yard sale to complete strangers, YOU are a puppymill...
18. Lastly, if you have more than 10 people who have complained/accused you and your kennel name of dirty, shady, filthy dealings because they themselves have had previous bad experiences with you, YOU ARE A PUPPYMILL.
Do the correct thing, spay all the dogs you own, place them in pet homes.
Do not breed one more dog you have.
You may not be able to undo the damage you have done to your reputation, but you can start making good by doing the dogs in your kennel a life saving favor. Have a heart and be a human being by spaying/neutering your dogs. And for petes sake, buy a plant!
I have came into contact with several Puppy mill breeders. Sometimes it is hard to know what to look for if you are not aware of what to look for.
I have a list of specific things that may help you determine if the person you are dealing with is in fact a Puppy miller..
1...who's name are their dogs registered in? A lot of times a miller will register their dogs in someone elses name to hide their identity and even go as far as to use only CKC (Continental Kennel Club) as their main registry. They do this to avoid AKC's inspections and fee's associated with DNA'ing studs and litters they register. I came into contact recently with a miller who registered all her dogs in her teenage daughters name. When I googled her name I found that she had been convicted, found guilty and served a 18 month prison term for animal abuse and neglect. In short, she had been busted for running a puppy mill.
2...go to the home of the puppy/dog you are purchasing. See where and how the dogs are kept. How socialized are they? Do they growl or bark non-stop or try to bite? Do they look well cared for and do they look clean and socialized?
3... How many dogs does this breeder have? If the numbers seem a bit high or too many, walk away. Too high of numbers is a red flag. If someone has too many dogs, how are they getting the one on one attention they need individually to be properly socialized?
4...How many litters a year do they have? Most millers ALWAYS have puppies at any given time of the year, usually a couple litters a month. Where are the puppies kept? Inside or outside? A lot of good reputable breeders use kennels, but most always keep their puppies inside while they are nursing for supervision, and most good breeders ALWAYS supervise deliveries of their puppies. A lot of millers use kennels and barns just as well, but most let the mothers whelp and deliver the puppies outside on their own where the other dogs are kept, never letting them inside what-so- ever.
5...What are their goals in breeding? Do their dogs look like good representations of the breed? Any good breeder is in it to better the breed and hold true to the standard of the breed they are producing. Puppy millers are in it for the money. They do not care about producing better specimens of the breed they are reproducing and they do not care about genetics or any aspect of the dogs structure. Most millers care mainly about color and quantity instead of structure and quality. In short, millers are in it to make money, not to better the breed.
A lot of millers produce 'designer' breeds or mixed mutts. Probably because they do not have a good example of the initial breed itself. Mixing the dogs breeds in a sense 'hides' the flaws and serves to better fullfill the demand for pet quality designer mutts. This is not a good breeder!
Be careful when choosing your next puppy or dog. Ask questions. Ask LOTS of questions. If they have a website, review it carefully. Every question you have will probably be answered, but if it isn't, ask.
A good breeder is always willing to talk about their dogs and most usually always is willing to allow you to visit -by appointment, to see the dog or puppy you are intending to purchase.
Anything contained on this page is my personal idea's and my thoughts as to what a puppymill is to me. It is not copyrighted and is available to who ever wants to post it. Feel free to copy and paste it anywhere you choose, and as always.....Have a nice day:)
